Targeting biofilms using phages and their enzymes

چکیده

The complex biofilm architecture composed of extracellular polymeric structures (EPS) provides a protective shield to physiologically diverse bacterial cells immersed in its structure. evolutionary interplay between bacteria and their viruses (phages) forced the latter ones develop specific strategies overcome defensive barriers kill sessile cells. Phages are equipped with wide panel enzyme-degrading EPS macromolecules which together powerful weapons combat biofilms. Antibiofilm performance can be achieved by combining phages or phage-borne enzymes other antimicrobials such as antibiotics. Nevertheless, variety encoded phage genomes still need explored. To advance control we must deepen understanding biology itself, well discover better exploit unlimited antibacterial potential phages.

Using Phages to Exterminate Biofilms

Biofilms are thought to be always a major concern within the healthcare field and food industries. The resistance properties of biofilm mediated bacteria confer persistent that is being somewhat challenging to address. Biofilms can be more resistant to antibiotics than individual planktonic cells. For this reason, the use of novel alternative strategies to management biofilm formation is needed...

Targeting microbial biofilms using Ficin, a nonspecific plant protease

Biofilms, the communities of surface-attached bacteria embedded into extracellular matrix, are ubiquitous microbial consortia securing the effective resistance of constituent cells to environmental impacts and host immune responses. Biofilm-embedded bacteria are generally inaccessible for antimicrobials, therefore the disruption of biofilm matrix is the potent approach to eradicate microbial bi...

Polymicrobial Biofilms and Their Control Using Natural Agents

Biofilms are microbial communities that show surface association and are enclosed in a matrix of Exopolysaccharide (EPS). It is now estimated that a significant proportion of all human microbial infections involve biofilm formation. Candida species are commensals of humans, which under stressful conditions becomes an opportunistic pathogen causing candidiasis. Biofilm formation also occurs on i...

Organophosphate compounds and their biodegradation; using enzymes as an increased efficiency approach

Organophosphorus compounds are widely used in pesticides, insecticides in agriculture and as nervous chemical agents. These chemicals inhibit the acetylcholinesterase enzyme activity that is responsible for the nervous impulse in organisms. This effect leads to an increase in acetylcholine level and finally neuronal complications. Many methods are used to degrade and decontaminate these compou...

Synergy and Order Effects of Antibiotics and Phages in Killing Pseudomonas aeruginosa Biofilms

In contrast to planktonic cells, bacteria imbedded biofilms are notoriously refractory to treatment by antibiotics or bacteriophage (phage) used alone. Given that the mechanisms of killing differ profoundly between drugs and phages, an obvious question is whether killing is improved by combining antibiotic and phage therapy. However, this question has only recently begun to be explored. Here, i...
